Bangkok Wats

Today I explored 3 of Bangkok's most famous Wats - Buddhist temples.

Wat Pho is a very large wat complex which includes 100 pagodas - each contains ashes of the deceased - normally several people. Here I am amongst the 3 largest at Wat Pho. The larger the pagoda - the more important the deceased whose ashes are contained within.

216 - More of the 100 pagodas at Wat Pho. All are ornately decorated with glazed ceramic tiles and gold leaf.

What Wat Pho is most famous for is that it contains the largest reclining Buddha in Thailand - 48 meters long and about 20 meters tall. This is a pic of it's head. It is very difficult to get a pic with any perspective or frame of reference for its size. Many think that it is the most beautiful depiction of Buddha's face. Note intricate gold leaf designs on ceiling.

This is a pic of the reclining Buddha taken from its feet looking back towards its head. In the foreground are its feet. All the toe print lines are inlaid mother of pearl. The statue is gold leafed bronze. Really impressive.

This is a pic of the main temple at Wat In <-- "In" is short for Intrawihan.

Wat In is most famous for containing the largest stature of a standing Buddha in Thailand - it is 63 meters tall, bronze and gold leafed. It is located outside - not inside a temple. Very imposing.

Wat "White Marble" was built 150 years ago of white marble imported from Italy. It is the only wat in Thailand constructed from marble.

Wat "White Marble" interior Buddha is considered my many as "the most beautiful depiction of Buddha in Thailand". It certainly was different from most Buddha statues I have seen. Note all walls and pillars are white marble.
