Small holes in walls? Think the wailing wall in Isreal where notes are stuck into the masonary cracks. Anglor worshippers would chistle the holes and put gold, pearls, precious stones into them, cover the holes with plaster/stucco and repaint them. Grave robbers would look for them and dig out contents. The holes stayed.
Anything completely restored to show what they looked like "new"? No nothing that I know of other than embellished postcards.
